First blog, eh mate? (which is Australian for my first blog post)
So the first week of March I will be heading to Australia to start up on a southern hemisphere harvest. I'll be working at Balnaves of Coonwarra in, of all places, Coonawarra. From what I've heard, it's the equivalent of Iowa only instead of corn its grapes. I can only hope the internet has made it there, otherwise this will be a very short-lived blog. My position will be a harvest winemaker which I'm not entirely sure what it will entail at a smaller winery like Balnaves is. Also, apparently they produce wine for Parker's Coonawarra estate (which is actually the only reason I emailed the winery for a job; since I had actually tasted this wine during a VITIS tasting and loved it). Anyway, I hope I'll be able to travel around a bit before and after. I definitely want to cruise around Australia and check out Melbourne and Sydney and hopefully make it to Adelaide and Kangaroo Island (might as well take advantage of the flight out there, right?) It would also be pretty sweet to check out New Zealand and maybe southeast asia (really want to eat the food around there). Well, the winemaker has apparently set me up with a place to stay with some widower or something (I don't even know where or what the deal is; I've never even talked to the dude who hired me.....hopefully I really have this job). Either way I'm looking forward to hanging out with some crazy aussies and making some good wine. I got a new camera and video deal to document the journey and job. Again, hopefully internet and/or electricity exist where am I.
